A look into Sankofa Archives, and their efforts on connecting through creativity

Recently, we had the opportunity to delve into the vibrant world of Sankofa Archives, an Amsterdam-based platform dedicated to showcasing and supporting (under)represented talent. One of their many community-driven initiatives, the second edition of the @Sankofa.Archives neighbourhood closet sale, gave us a glimpse into their impactful work.
The Neighbourhood closet sale was a vibrant showcase of local creativity featuring pop-ups from local brands such as Geminis, L’origine, and Nine, alongside a clothing repair workshop by Trinity Williams and captivating visual art by Ian Bodo, Jordan Yvel, Jaer Vogelland, and Rashida Mamam. These collaborations highlight the diversity of talent within the community and also underscore Sankofa Archives' mission. A mission towards facilitating connections and guiding one’s creative process by providing meaningful experiences on both a local and global scale.
Sankofa Archives emerged from a realization that the most effective approach is to simply start. In a conversation with one of the core members, we learned about the essence of Sankofa Archives—a desire to create something by and for the community. They emphasized the importance of taking action and trusting the process in their journey. Reflecting on their growth, they expressed gratitude for taking that first step, acknowledging the learning curve and opportunities for improvement along the way. Their first exhibition, 'The Sankofa Closet,' showcased the captivating works of visual artist Amber Martinez during Museum Night 2022 at Kazerne Reigersbos. This event set the stage for their transformative initiatives, including collaborations with artists and organizations, where artists are given a platform to showcase their talents and engage with the local community through various creative outlets.
Recent collaborations
Continuing their collaborative efforts, Sankofa Archives recently partnered with Oysterfest, and London-based artist Teoni, to bring Beau Beau’s Art Club from the UK to Amsterdam. As an extension of the exhibition Studio 417 by Teoni, participants were invited to view a heartfelt tribute to the sanctity of creative spaces. Teoni, whose exhibition showcased nine works of oil paint and pastel on paper, and derived its name from the art studio she shares with fellow co-creatives back home. During the art club, visitors immerse themselves in an afternoon of art-making through various exercises and mediums guided by Teoni who regularly hosts the art club at Beau Beau's cafe in London. Resulting In a collaborative canvas that embodies the power of art to connect people across borders.
These connections facilitated by Sankofa Archives are a testament to the belief that creativity can be a communal endeavour, not just a solitary pursuit. Each pop-up, workshop, and exhibition serves as a moment for dialogue, learning, and mutual inspiration, enabling individuals from diverse backgrounds to come together in a celebration of their creative spirit. As Sankofa Archives continues to weave these networks of artists, creators, and community members, it reaffirms the essential truth that art—in all its forms—is a vital cornerstone of community, culture, and connection.

What can we expect from them in the future?
For their upcoming event, the collective teamed up with Oyster once again to present ‘Eye 4 an Eye’ at Melkweg Amsterdam on the 22nd of March. This exclusive showcase and cypher brings together emerging UK rap artists and talents, introducing their music to the Dutch audience, with curated beats and sounds from emerging Dutch and UK producers fusing Grime, UK rap, and New Age drill supported by DJ’s curated by Sankofa Archives.
